26 Nov 2009 - Day 4 (Part 1): Close encounter with animals at the Werribee Open Range Zoo

Our main highlight today is to visit the Werribee Open Range Zoo. As the zoo is not within Melbourne city, we have made a booking for the zoo shuttle. Both the shuttle as well as the zoo admission are included in our See Melbourne Smartvisit Cards.

To catch the shuttle, we need to be at the Arts Centre by 10am. As such, we all woke up pretty early today. The walk from our hotel to Arts Centre is about 20mins. Initially we thought of taking the tram, but with two strollers, we felt that it could be quite difficult, especially when the tram is quite packed. Anyway, since we were early, we still had sometime to have our breakfast at McDonald along the way. Below is a nice painting outside a shop along Swanston Street.

The journey to Werribee is about half an hour. On the way, we saw that the sky was beginning to turn dark. In fact, the moment we stepped out of our hotel this morning, we were quite worried because the weather was quite wet. Also, weather forecast did said that there will be showers today, so we were really praying hard. When we reached the zoo entrance, there was a slight drizzle but not too bad.

Werribee Open Range Zoo is home to animals from the grasslands of Africa, Asia, North America and Australia. First we headed out on a guided safari tour through the grassy plains and sweeping river terraces rich with rhino, giraffe, antelope and zebra. During this tour, we could really get up close to these amazing animals. At one part of the tour, the giraffe was so close to us that we could almost touch it. It was a great experience!

Other than the above safari bus tour, there is actually another open-vehicle adventure tour conducted by trained guide (below). However, we were unable to go on that tour because the minimum age is 7 years old.

Our safari bus tour took us back to the zoo entrance after a 45mins ride. We took some rest outside a cafe and had a quick bite for lunch. It's also time to change diapers for both Jerlene and Javier. There is an exhibit next to the cafe showcasing many little cute Meerkats. Jerlene had fun chasing them from left to right........

Other than the bus tours through the Savannah, there are several walking trails that we can take. As we had two young ones with us, we decided to go on the shortest trail, Volcanic Plains Walk. This walk although is short, but we had some very close encounter with the kangeroos, wallabies and emus. Jerlene totally enjoyed the walk and she was so daring that she simply ran all over the plains.

As we come to the end of the walk, it started to rain and we quickly went into the gift shop.

The rain got heavier but fortunately we had seen what we wanted to see. Anyway, in less than an hour, we will be taking the shuttle back to Melbourne city. Glad to see the kids, especially Jerlene, enjoyed this trip.
