1 Jun 2017 - Iceland Day 7: Stóragjá

After a short break at the cottage, we decided to explore around the area since it was still bright.  We drove to Stóragjá, similar to Grjótagjá which we had visited earlier in the day.  We parked our car by the roadside as there is no proper parking space.
Stóragjá is situated just outside of Reykjahlíð town.  It cannot be seen from the road so you really need to know where it's located to find it.  Google map helps a lot.  :-)

I walked through this eerie fissure (slightly tricky to access) before reaching a once popular bathing spot.
The water pool in the Stóragjá can be reached by a ladder and a rope.
Cooling water temperatures (currently about 28°C) and the growth of potentially harmful algae mean this cave pool is no longer safe to swim.
As Tracy, Jerlene and Javier were in the car waiting for me, I took all the photos I need and quickly returned to the car.
