16 Jun 2025 - PEK Day 3: Embarking on a journey to the Great Wall

Today's program was the highlight of this trip.  We embarked on a journey to the Great Wall of China.  Early morning, we took the metro to Guomao Station where we boarded the tour bus.
Our journey began in the heart of Beijing. Boarding the bus, we eased into the morning bustle of the city. As the coach pulled away, the first stretch took us past avenues lined with high-rise towers, gleaming office blocks, and sprawling residential complexes.
Beijing is a city in motion, and from the bus window, we really see its contrasts: sleek corporate towers side by side with traditional courtyards tucked behind busy streets. The scale of urban development is striking as entire skylines of glass and steel unfolding one after another.
Soon, the city thinned out, and the bus joined the expressway heading northeast. Wide, multi-lane highways cut through the outskirts, carrying commuters, trucks, and long-distance travelers alike.
Out here, the scenery began to shift. Billboards advertised new housing developments, tech parks, and weekend resorts. Rows of apartment towers gave way to stretches of open fields, dotted with farmhouses and clusters of small towns.
As we left the plains behind, the landscape grew more rugged. The highway wound into low hills and forested slopes, passing tunnels carved through mountainsides. The air felt clearer, the traffic lighter.
From the bus window, we saw glimpses of rivers running alongside the road, and villages with tiled rooftops nestled against the hills.
After about 2 to 2.5 hours, the bus pulled into the entrance of Gubei Watertown.  Our adventure began.....
