The Science Mentorship Programme (SMP) is jointly organised by the Gifted Education Branch of the Ministry of Education (MOE) with local tertiary institutions such as National University of Singapore (NUS), National Institute of Education (NIE) / Nanyang Technological University (NTU), local Polytechnics and specialised organisations. The programme strives to cultivate the spirit of inquiry in students who are interested in science, by providing them with opportunities for interaction with scientists and to perform scientific investigations in research laboratories.
Javier and two of his schoolmates were selected for this programme. They had met their mentors from NTU to work on one of his projects on a weekly basis from January to July, and 2 weeks full time during the June school holidays. That was the reason why he did not come along with us on our June trip to Beijing.
Now that they were done with the project, they had written a scientific paper for publication in the Proceedings of the Youth Science Conference (YSC). Today, through a virtual Teams meeting, they showcased their projects to an audience of peers, teachers and scientists, who judged and provided valuable feedback to them.
