17 Jun 2025 - PEK Day 4: Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷)

Tucked away in the heart of Beijing’s old city, Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷) offers an enchanting blend of ancient hutong history and contemporary youth culture.
Nanluoguxiang is one of the oldest hutongs in Beijing, dating back over 700 years to the Yuan Dynasty. Stretching roughly 800 meters, the alley runs from Di'anmen East Street (地安门东大街) in the south to Gulou East Street (鼓楼东大街) in the north and is flanked by a web of narrow side lanes.
Walking down Nanluoguxiang is like strolling through a time capsule. Traditional siheyuan (四合院 - courtyard houses) line both sides, many still occupied by locals or repurposed into boutique stores, cafes, and art galleries. The alley exudes an atmosphere that balances nostalgia with innovation.
We had to try some of the local street snacks which all looked so yummy!
Nanluoguxiang isn't just about shopping and snacking. The side alleys offer peaceful escapes where we could see the daily rhythms of local life.
Nanluoguxiang is more than just a tourist spot. It's a living, breathing piece of Beijing’s story.
