The bus journey ascending Mount Tateyama to Murodo Station is one of the most spectacular and serene segments of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. The climb to Murodo station, Japan’s highest bus terminal at 2,450 meters, offers a captivating transition from lush forest to alpine wilderness.
We started seeing snow by the roadside and on the slope of mountains. The ascend began in dense, mist-kissed cedar forests, with some trees over 1,000 years old, and this early portion winded gently through towering evergreens, mossy undergrowth, and the cool hush of mountain air.
The snow accumulated by the roadside got taller and taller as we continued up the mountain.
As the road climbed higher along the Tateyama Toll Road, the vegetation shifts to highland forests. The winding road zigzag past cascading mountain streams and waterfalls
Above 2,000 m, the tree line thins dramatically. The bus slowly wound past glacial terrain.
This section was often lined with towering snow walls in the famous Yuki-no-Otani, sometimes up to 18 meters tall. It feels like driving through a frozen canyon. Really mesmerizing!
