The moment we alighted our tour bus at Murodo Station, our first thought was all the same. It's freezing COLD at -5°C. And very windy too.
There was supposed to be mountains all around us but all we saw was "white".
At one moment, we thought of going back to the tour bus as we were not well prepared for such weather. However, we decided to "brave" through it as we may not be back here another time.As we walked into Murodo Station, we immediately saw a notice advising visitors that the main Snow Wall Walk was cancelled today due to poor visibility and safety concern. There was a fine print at the bottom of the notice that mentioned of a shorter Snow Wall which was opened. As such, we decided to go take a look.
Once we stepped outdoor, we once again felt the strong wind and freezing cold weather.
There was supposed to be a picturesque volcanic crater lake nearby but all we saw was "white". Visibility was extremely low.
We then figured our way towards the nearby shorter snow corridor.
This corridor spans several dozen meters with walls typically 2–7 m high, much shorter than the main 500 m route, but still dramatic enough to create an immersive snowy tunnel.
This place was perfect for memorable snow selfies, especially with the white canopy overhead, even on grey or snowy days.
This shorter Snow Corridor Walk at Murodo offers a beautifully snowy experience even in challenging weather. While it lacks the grandeur of the main wall, it still immersed us in a winter wonderland with front-row views of alpine snow, crisp air, and a serene atmosphere.
The ground was very slippery and I actually slipped a few times even though I tried to walk very cautiously.
After spending about 20 minutes walking through the snow wall, we continued to explore the surrounding area. By this time, we were more or less adapted to the weather, though the cold was still no joke.Tateyama Snow Wall was at an elevation of 2,390m. This was my first time experiencing a surrounding temperature of below freezing point.
As there was still sometimes before we needed to return to our tour bus, we went for another walk through the snow wall.
It was a unique experience, and we were not disappointed with the cancellation of the Main Snow Wall Walk. In fact, with such poor weather, we could fully understand of the safety concern.
