24 Feb 2024 - National Olympiad in Informatics 2024 (NOI)

Javier had registered himself for the National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI) 2024 and he went for the qualification round today.

The National Olympiad of Informatics (NOI) is hosted annually by the School of Computing of the National University of Singapore.  The NOI is modelled after the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), the ultimate international competition in computing.  NOI emphasizes creativity in problem solving on the one hand, and programming skill and expertise on the other.

According to Javier, the key challenge is not simply about solving the problem.  The computer program used to solve the problem must run efficiently and should return a result within few seconds.  He managed to solve a few problems, but his codes were not very efficient and took few minutes to run.  Anyway, there were many other participants who could not even find a solution.  When I looked at the questions, I think I'll probably score zero because I could not even understand the question.

Hope he'll qualify for the final.  :-)

23 Feb 2024 - Clouds and Planes

Took the following photos in the morning when the sun was hiding behind the clouds.  However, its rays were penetrating through the clouds.
As there was an Airshow currently going on in Singapore, I managed to capture some of the aircrafts while taking photos of the cloud.

15 Feb 2024 - Marina Bay Dragon Drone Show

The Marina Bay waterfront lighted up this Lunar New Year with a dazzling drone light show. Titled The Legend of the Dragon Gate, the event would see 1,500 drones take to the sky to tell the story of the mythical Dragon King.  The drones below were ready to take off and put up a good show.
The show could be seen from all around the waterfront.  We decided to watch it from the vantage point which was near to the floating platform.
The 10-minute performance drew on the legend of the dragon gate (龙门), which is said to lie at the top of a waterfall that flows from a mythical mountain. Carps (鲤鱼) that are persistent enough to swim upstream and make the final, brave leap through the dragon gate are believed to turn into a powerful dragon.
The drone show, which was free, was excellent, especially with Marina Bay Sands as the backdrop.  We took photos of the beautifully lighting up MBS before leaving.
Watch the following video for highlights of this spectacular drone show.

15 Feb 2024 - Turquoise Dragons at Marina Bay Sands (MBS)

We were at Marina Bay area for the drone show but before that, we visited MBS to witness the majestic Turquoise Dragons suspended over the Atrium.

There’s also a Chinese arch behind it, which gives people the impression that the creature has just flown underneath.
It was quite impressive comparing with some other dragon's installation that received loads of negative feedback from social media.

10 Feb 2024 - A Visit to Bird Paradise (Mandai Wildlife Reserve)

We visited Bird Paradise today, hoping that there will be lesser crowd as most people will be busy doing visiting on Day 1 of Chinese New Year.  From the car park, we first arrived at a man-made waterfall.  Bird Paradise is basically an upgraded version of our previous Jurong Bird Park.
Before entering into the park, we had our breakfast at A&W.
We bought our admission tickets online and with our WildPass, which we applied for free, we got additional discount for our tickets.
The first area which we visited was the Penguin Cove, which features one of the world’s largest sub-Antarctic, cold salt-water habitats for penguins.  Besides the king and gentoo penguins, the cove is also home to the northern rockhopper penguins, known for their ability to hop, and feisty behaviour.
Next, we went for the first Wings of the World Presentation, which showcased many popular birds and their natural talents, breathtaking plumage and sharp-as-claws IQ.  The most unforgettable moment was none other than the amazing Amigo, a yellow-naped Amazon Parrot, with its incredible mimicking ability.  It is the only bird in the world that can sing in three languages. Watch the video below for some of the key highlights of this bird show.
After the presentation, we explored the other zones in the park where we saw flamingoes, lories, scarlet Ibis, spoonbills and many more.  It's great that these birds were all roaming freely in a huge aviary instead of confining them in small cages.
In the afternoon, we went for the second presentation, Predators on Wings, which showcased birds of prey, the majestic creatures at the top of their food chain.  Once again, you can watch the key highlights in the video below.
We spent the rest of the day trying to cover every zone in the park.  The weather was getting really hot in the afternoon, and we were all physically tired from all the walking.  We decided to leave the park at about 4pm and we had an early dinner at Springleaf Prata shop.
Watch the video below for highlights of our visit to Bird Paradise.

9 Feb 2024 - Annual Reunion Dinner

Today is Chinese New Year eve and also our annual reunion dinner.  Before the main steamboat meal, we did Lohei (捞鱼生) as usual, HUAT AH!
