19 Mar 2024 - 27th National Olympiad in Informatics Results are OUT!

The NOI result is out and congratulations to Javier, who managed to get a Bronze.  This is an exceptional achievement, considering he picked up a new programming language (C++) all by himself and learned it in two days before the competition.  Click here for the list of all winners.

Looking through the list of winners, it seemed like there were only 3 winners from his school but he's the only one from IP while the other two were from JC.  Well done, Javier!

Above is his e-certificate sent to him from NUS School of Computing.

16 Mar 2024 - Final Round of the National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI)

Javier qualified for the final round of National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI) and went for the competition in NUS School of Computing today.

During the qualification round, Javier used Python to program the solution for the problems as that is the only programming language that he knows of.  However, after reading the following on the NOI website, he decided to pick up C++ so that his code could run more efficiently.  I was very amazed that he actually learned how to code in C++ all by himself in two days and then went for the competition.  To me, that itself is a great achievement.  The process of learning is more important than the result of the competition.
The competition ended pretty late today and we went for a late dinner.  During dinner, he was so excited to share all the questions in the competition.  Once again, I took a while to fully understand each question, and that was after hearing the explanation from him.  Really proud of him and glad to see him so happy in doing something he's really interested in.

9 Mar 2024 - Is this a nest?

While doing our usual gardening at our roof terrace, we saw the following on one of our wooden chairs.  It looks like a bird nest but we were not sure.  We decided to leave it alone and monitor for a while.

8 Mar 2024 - Shortlisted to participate in Olympiad for all 3 Science Subjects

Over the past few weeks, TJC conducted a series of selection tests for Singapore Junior Biology Olympiad (SJBO), Singapore Junior Physics Olympiad (SJPO) and Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad (SJChO).  Javier did not prepare much for these tests and he just did some read up for Physics before the selection test.  And guess what, he got shortlisted to participate in all 3 subjects.  These were in addition to the Singapore Mathematics Olympiad (SMO) as well as the National Olympiad in Informatics (NOI) which he signed up earlier.  He was very puzzled because he said for Biology and Chemistry, he actually guessed most of the answers.  As such, the only explanation could be either he really answered those questions correctly with his "intelligent" guesses or all other students did worse than him.

Wish you all the best but please do not put too much stress on yourself.  Just do your best.  :-)

4-8 Mar 2024 - IP3 MOE-OBS Camp

The MOE-OBS Challenge Programme, jointly developed by MOE and OBS (c/o) MCCY, is part of the National Outdoor Adventure Education Master Plan announced in 2016.  As part of the programme, OBS has customized the 5-day residential course for Secondary Three Students to learn the value of resilience, empathy for others and have a positive attitude when facing difficult situations.

There are two campuses, one in Pulau Ubin and one in East Coast.  Javier was glad that his camp was at the East Coast Campus, which means he did not have to take a ferry across to Pulau Ubin.  He had a very bad seasick experience in one of our overseas trip.

This year, he and his school mates were joined with students from Pei Hwa Sec and Spectra Sec.
Though Javier had dreaded to go for this camp, he still completed it successfully with the following certificate.  :-)
