After exploring Zhang Garden (张园), we took a metro to Hailun Road Station (海伦路站). From there, we followed the direction on Google Map and arrived at 1933 Old Millfun (1933老场坊).
Built in 1933, it was once Shanghai's largest slaughterhouse! The architectural style is Art Deco, with a focus on concrete, glass, and steel. Some consider it an "eerie Gotham-Deco achievement". The complex was designed by the famous British architect Balfours and was inspired by ancient Roman basilicas. At the time, it was the third-largest slaughterhouse globally.
After years of abandonment, the buildings were renovated in 1998 and given a new life. The complex reopened as "1933 Old Millfun" and transformed into a cultural and creative hub.One of the unique features of this complex is its maze-like layout. The complex consists of five separate buildings with multiple levels, connected by bridges and staircases. This can be a fun and at the same time, slightly confusing experience for visitors.
The exposed concrete walls, high ceilings, and lack of windows create a unique industrial atmosphere.
The juxtaposition of the historical architecture with modern shops and cafes makes it a popular spot for photographers and Instagrammers.
The space houses a diverse mix of businesses, including art galleries, shops selling clothing and crafts, restaurants and cafes. This place is also an event venue for performances, exhibitions, and conferences.
Across the car park is the 1933 Conference and Exhibition Center.
Next to it is a building with two tall chimneys, which we decided to take a closer look. According to Google Map, it belongs to Coinfans Coffee.Along the river is the Shanghai International Design Exchange Center.
We then slowly walked back to Hailun Road metro station and took a metro to our next stop, Nanxiang (南翔).
