17 May 2013 - Hong Kong Day 6: To the City

We had spent the past 5 days in Lantau Island and on this last day of our trip, we decided to go to the city area.  From Tung Chung, we took the MTR to Tsim Tsa Shui (尖沙咀).  As we exit the MTR station, we went to a place called 1881 Heritage.  For the first time in over 120 years of its history, the Marine Police Headquarters compound has opened her doors to welcome visitors.  As testimony to the roles they played in Hong Kong's history, the five historic structures within the compound: the Main Building, the Stable Block, the Time Ball Tower, the Main Building of Former Kowloon Fire Station and the Accommodation Block of the Former Kowloon Fire Station were given the heritage status by the Hong Kong government.

We then walk towards Victoria Harbour where a 54-foot-tall rubber duck was supposed to be.  We are supposed to see this..........

 Or at least this........... (after it got deflated 2 days ago)

But all we see is this............

So no choice, we can only take pictures with these...........

Since there is nothing much here, we took the star ferry over to Chung Wan (中环).

We remember there is a very long stretch of escalators around this area so we decided to look for it.  We walked through a number of buildings but still could not find it.  As we were about to give up looking for it, it appeared right in front of us. The Central–Mid-levels escalators in Hong Kong is the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world. The entire system covers over 800 metres in distance and elevates over 135 metres from bottom to top. It was constructed in 1993 to provide a better commute by linking areas within the Central and Western District on Hong Kong Island.

We had our lunch at a 茶餐厅 around the mid level.  Next, we took the MTR to Causeway Bay to do some shopping at Times Square area.  However, the place was so crowded that it's impossible to shop.  We even had a hard time squeezing through the people, especially with the two kids.  Later then we realized that today is a public holiday.  We decided to move to somewhere where there was less crowd.  Along the road, we saw a stall selling 鸡蛋仔 and bought a bag.  Jerlene and Javier got addicted to it and we bought another bag before we left Causeway Bay.

By this time, Javier was too tired to walk and kept asking me to carry him.  We decided to head back to Citygate Outlet where it feels a lot more comfortable with much less crowd.
