15 Dec 2017 - Shanghai Day 1: Qibao Ancient Town (七宝古镇)

The first place of interest where we visited in this trip is Qibao Ancient Town (七宝古镇).  It can be easily reached by Metro Line 9. As the only ancient town forming part of greater Shanghai, with a history spanning over one thousand years, Qibao is more than just a living fossil of ancient Chinese conurbation and urban planning.
The first structure we saw is a bell tower.
As it started to drizzle, we took a short break under the shelter where there were lots of wishing amulets hanging all over the place.
Below is a map of QiBao Ancient Town.  We started our exploring this town from the northern street.
Visitors who are interested can rent costumes for photo taking in this ancient town.
Javier suddenly had a craving for Xiao Long Bao (小笼包) so we stopped by a place to have the authentic Xiao Long Bao.
It was a great feeling to enjoy the hot dumplings and Xiao Long Bao in such a cold weather.
We continued to explore the town after the quick bites.
Qibao is the closest water town to Shanghai.  In fact, I did not know there is such an ancient water town within Shanghai till we did our research about Shanghai before the trip.  Most people are only aware of those water towns that are in the outskirt cities such as Suzhou and Hangzhou.
Anyway, we were glad that we found this place as we do not have plan to visit other water towns which are not so easily accessible without going on a local tour.
There were several bridges built across the Puhui River (蒲汇塘) that link to the other side of the town,
Qibao town was built in Northern Song Dynasty (960-1126) and grew into a prosperous business center during Ming (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasties (1644-1911). There are two theories on how the name of this town comes about. The more reliable one says that the name originates from the Qibao Temple, famed for its good reputation.  The other theory seems more popular among the local people who tell folk tales about "seven treasures" (which is what 七宝 means).
Qibao Temple (七宝寺), with its ingenious designs for both buildings and gardens, presents visitors with an insight of the unique architectural styles of Han (BC206-220) and Tang Dynasty (618-907).
Qibao Old Street is divided into the two sections: the southern street and the northern street. The south street features with local snack. It homes many delicious snacks all over China. The north street is given priority to with tourism souvenirs, including antiques, calligraphy and paintings. Qibao Old Street has become a busy street that combines leisure, tourism, shopping as a whole.
After enjoying the beautiful scenery around, Javier again asked for Xiao Long Bao!  Since we were along the southern street with all sorts of local snacks, we entered a stall which sells Xiao Long Bao.
Xiao Long Bao was not sufficient to satisfy our taste buds.  There were simply too many "attractive" local snacks along the street.
I have read a lot about beggar chicken (叫花鸡) from Chinese Martial Arts Novels but today I finally got to see it in real life.
Jerlene and Javier bought their favourite sugar coated haws on sticks (冰糖葫芦).
We spent about 3 hours in Qibao Town before taking the metro back to Hong Qiao.
As it's winter now, sunset was very early.  The sky started to turn dark before 5pm.

15 Dec 2017 - Shanghai Day 1: Touch Down at Pudong Airport (上海浦东机场)

We touched down at Shanghai Pudong Airport at about 6am.  The custom clearance was ok and it did not take too long.
We had booked our Airport Hotel Shuttle (Egobus) before the trip.  Though it's more expensive than using the public transport (Metro), we wanted a more hassle-free and comfortable ride to our hotel.  As we were the only ones booked on the shuttle at that time, we had the entire mini bus all to ourselves.
The journey from Pudong Airport to our hotel at Hong Qiao (虹桥) took about an hour.  As it's still early in the morning when we reached the hotel, our room was not ready for us to check in.  We decided to leave our luggage at the concierge and start exploring Shanghai.
After enquiring on the location of a nearby mall, we decided to go there for our breakfast.
The weather was wet and cold today.  Hopefully it will not dampen our spirit for our upcoming trip in Shanghai.
The first mall that we visited in Shanghai is Arch Walk.
What attracted us is its unique building architecture.

12 Dec 2017 - Celebrating Dad's birthday at T3

We were at Changi Airport Terminal 3 today to have a birthday lunch with my dad.  At the center of the departure hall, there was a huge treehouse with Sanrio characters.  Yes, it's obvious that Christmas is just round the corner.
We had lunch at Paradise Dynasty at T3.

10 Dec 2017 - Pokemon Gen 3 has arrived!

Pokemon Go Gen 3 has just been launched 2 days back.  Will we see the similar crowd gathering around void deck, playground or shopping mall again?  Regardless, it's time to plan for more family outdoor activities in the coming weekends.

9 Dec 2017 - Lunch at Arnold’s Fried Chicken

We had our lunch at Arnold’s Fried Chicken for the very first time today even though we have been passing by it every week for the past few years.  Though Jerlene and Javier prefer roasted chicken over fried chicken, they still enjoyed the meal.  :-)

5 Dec 2017 - Cherry Tomato plants start to bear fruits

While showering tender loving care to our plants tonight, we realized our cherry tomato plants start to bear fruits for the first time!!!  Can't wait to see them turn into bright red colour.  :-)

3 Dec 2017 - The only Supermoon phenomenon in 2017

Taken from Wikipedia, a supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that approximately coincides with the closest distance that the Moon reaches to Earth in its elliptic orbit, resulting in a larger-than-usual apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth.  Did you manage to witness it today?  If you missed it, not to worry, the next one will be on 2 Jan 2018.

3 Dec 2017 - Adhoc Badminton session with neighbour

This evening while we were on the way to get our car in the car park, we saw our neighbour playing badminton in the open area.  They invited Jerlene and Javier to join them.  As we were not in a rush, I agreed to let them have a short session.  Now that we know our neighbour is into playing badminton, there will be more of such sessions in future.

30 Nov 2017 - This time confirmed is drug allergy

About two weeks ago, Javier had a suspected case of drug allergy.  Today, I was very sure that it was indeed drug allergy as both Javier's legs had developed rashes.  Once again, I am going to stop all the "suspicious" medicine and hopefully the rashes will subside soon.  Sigh.....seems like Javier is allergic to quite a number of drugs, just like his daddy and mommy....  :-(

27 Nov 2017 - Certificate of Academic Achievement

There was an envelope addressed to Javier in our letter box today.  It was a Certificate of Academic Achievement for his good performance in school, both academically and conduct.  Well done, Javier!  Keep up the good work.

26 Nov 2017 - Christmas round the corner

Javier invited his ex-neighbour friend to our place for the afternoon.  As Christmas is just one month away, I took out our Xmas Tree for them to decorate.  They enjoyed hanging ornament on the tree and in half an hour's time, they were done with the decoration.  I finished it with a little bit of touch up and put up the lighting.
After that, they continued with their playtime till dinner.

25 Nov 2017 - Change of Student Care next year

The student care at Rosyth School has been operated by Knowledge Park Educare in the past 2 years.  Starting next year, the operation will be taken over by Kidz Treehouse.  This morning, there was a briefing session by the new operator followed by the registration.
The existing students at the centre was very sad with the change as they are very comfortable with the teachers who were with them for the past 2 years.  Let's hope it is a change for the better.

21 Nov 2017 - mBot, a programmable robot!

In order to make Scratch programming more fun and interesting, we bought a robot called mBot for Javier which he can use Scratch programming to control it.
As the assembly of the robot was not so straight forward for an eight years old kid, I helped Javier with the task.
The robot set came with several sensors which can be programmed easily using a similar interface which Javier is familiar with.
After mBot was assembled, I demonstrated to them the two default modes, a line-following mode and an obstacle avoidance mode.  The demonstration had created excitement to both Jerlene and Javier.  Once Javier took over mBot, within several minutes, he completed coding his first program.  I can't wait to see what he will program for mBot moving forward.  :-)
