15 Sep 2024 - Bidadari Park

Bidadari Park is a 13ha-park within Bidadari Estate and was recently opened to public on 3 Sep.  This new park takes up more than 10 percent of Bidadari's land area and spans more than 18 football fields, with a 5.2km network of trails.
The new park was inspired by the Hundred Acre Wood from children's classic Winnie the Pooh and builds on the area's original wooded and rustic nature, featuring a recreational lake, trails and treehouse playground.  A stone's throw from the park's sole car park stands a 5m-tall tree house playground termed the Adventure Playwoods.
There is an extension of the park, known as the Hillock, situated in between two housing areas. The Hillock will be connected to the main park area via a land bridge across Bidadari Park Drive.  The bridge, about 100m in length and 19m wide, is flanked by verdant flora on both sides, with a collection of flowering shrubs and trees planted to create a conducive environment for butterflies and birds.
As the Hillock is located on higher topography within the park with more vegetation, it also serves as a bird sighting "hotspot".  Primarily comprising of existing mature trees such as Tembusu and Ficus, this area will serve as a complementary habitat to the core of Bidadari Park.
There are two marshlands in the park which portray how nature is used to manage floods.  The upper marshland only forms temporarily after heavy rain and provides essential habitats to amphibians, insects and water dependent birds.  The lower marshland is permanent and is a habitat for aquatic species all year round.  During the rainy season, rainwater that collects at the upper marshland flows through the lower marshland and eventually into the Ficus Stream.
Those visiting the lower marshland can amble through the boardwalk, an elevated platform above the water, and rest at the observation deck and pavilion that is designed to resemble a bird nest.
One of the key highlights of the park is a scenic lake called Alkaff Lake.  It occupies a 1.8ha space within the park and is a recreational zone which also protects the estate from floods. The lake can hold up to 40,000 cubic metres of water, the equivalent of 16 Olympic-sized swimming pools.  By capturing the rainwater, the lake slows down the amount flowing into downstream drainage systems and mitigates the risk of flooding in the estate.
In the middle of the lake is a small island where a majestic Rain Tree stands.
A cascading creek leading to Alkaff Lake directs excess rainwater from the surrounding areas into the lake.
We decided to walk round the beautiful lake to view it from different angles.  At one point, we saw a kingfisher standing on a pole.
The park is connected to the nearby Woodleigh Mall.  There is a viewing deck at the extension of the mall.  From high above the ground, the view of the entire lake is superb!

6 Sep 2024 - Durian Buffet

From 2 to 15 Sep 2024, Fairprice Xtra at Hougang One had setup a tent outside the mall for Durian Buffet.  For 45 minutes, you can eat all the regular durians (Red Prawn, XO, D24, Tekka, D101, D2) you want for $35.  For $55, you can also pick Musang King, Black Thorn, Wang Zhong Wang and Golden Pillow.

3 Sep 2024 - Lava Floor Game (Standard Size)

Normally during school holidays, we would pick a day to play an "Escape Room" game.  This time round, we decided to play something different, a "Lava Floor" game.  In this game, the floor is lava, and the only way to survive is to work together.  Green tiles are the safe zone.  Our objective is to step on the blue tiles and clear them to complete each level.  Avoid the red lava tiles or we will lose a life.
It was quite strenuous.  After the first 10 levels, we were all perspiring like mad.  However, we managed to complete all 99 levels!  In fact, we broke the record as the staff told us before the game that the highest record prior to us was at level 94.  Below was our score!  Well done, TEAM!
Below video shows the highlight in Time-Lapse.

28 Aug 2024 - Olympiad Awards in all 3 Science Disciplines

Today Javier came home with the following 3 certificates.  He managed to achieve Silver for his Singapore Junior Physics Olympiad (SJPO).  No one in his school achieved Gold and he's the only one in IP who was awarded Silver.
For Singapore Junior Biology Olympiad (SJBO), he got a Bronze.  This was unexpected because he totally did not prepare for it.
As for Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad (SJCO), he received the Certificate of Participation.  He said the paper was tough because most of the questions were from topics that he will only be taught in IP4.
I must say it's a superb achievement for Javier.  First of all, not many students were selected to participate in all three science disciplines.  And he did it all by himself through his own studies.  We actually asked him if he wanted to attend any boot camps which help students to prepare for such exams and he said he can manage it by himself.  Proud of him!

9 Aug 2024 - NDP Aerial Display and Fireworks

This my yearly ritual, watching NDP Aerial Display by RSAF and fireworks at my roof terrace.

8 Aug 2024 - Our very own Mt Fuji?

Not sure if you see anything unique in the photo below.  To me, I thought I saw Mount Fuji at a distance.
We did not get to see Mount Fuji during our recent Tokyo trip.  Never did I expect to see it right at home.....hahaha.....
Nature is really amazing, especially when you have a bit of imagination.  :-)

9 Aug 2024 - Rainbow on our Nation's Birthday

Today is our National Day.  While waiting for the aerial display at my roof terrace, I could see dark clouds gathered in the east.  In fact, it started to drizzle.  However, it did not spoil my mood because a rainbow began to appear right in front of me.
The seven colours of rainbow became more and more distinct.
If you looked closely to the below photo, you could see one of the RSAF planes were flying above the rainbow!
Gradually, the clouds dispersed, and the rain stopped.  Time to get ready for the aerial display.

8 Aug 2024 - Honourable Mention in Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO)

The Singapore Mathematical Olympiad (SMO) is a prestigious annual competition organized by the Singapore Mathematical Society (SMS) to identify and nurture mathematically talented students in Singapore. It is one of the most challenging and competitive math competitions in Singapore.  The SMO was held in two rounds: the first round is open to all secondary school students, while the second round was invitation-only and requires exceptional performance in the first round.
In this year's edition, Javier managed to receive Honourable Mention for the Senior Section, where he's actually competing with those Sec 4 or IP4 students.  According to him, there were many topics that he has not been taught yet.  As such, he's satisfied with the result but aims to do better next year when he is in IP4.

7 Aug 2024 - Jerlene's Drawing getting better

Jerlene showed me one of her recent sketches and I'm pretty impressed by what she drew.  Comparing to those that she drew during her primary and secondary school years, this is definitely a significant "upgrade"!

4 Aug 2024 - Bronze Award in Singapore Mathematics Project Festival

The Singapore Mathematics Project Festival (SMPF) is a prestigious annual competition organized by the Singapore Mathematical Society (SMS). It provides a platform for secondary school students in Singapore to showcase their mathematical creativity, problem-solving skills, and ability to apply mathematical concepts to real-world problems.  Students work in teams to develop innovative mathematical projects which can cover a variety of mathematical areas, including algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and applied mathematics.  The competition encourages students to think critically and come up with original solutions
Javier participated in this year's edition and received a Bronze Award for the Senior Section.  Congratulations!

3 Aug 2024 - Singapore's First Shrimp Broth Ramen

We were looking for a decent place to have our dinner this evening at Sengkang Grand Mall.  We passed by one store that attracted our attention.  It claimed to be Singapore's first Shrimp Broth Ramen.  Le Shrimp Ramen is under Paradise Group.
Le Shrimp Ramen is a perfect marriage of Japanese and Chinese culture, offering a simple menu of elaborate flavours, featuring two specialty broths – shrimp broth and tonkotsu broth.  Both types of broths were great.

20 Jul 2024 - Beautiful Altocumulus Clouds

As I was walking home today, I looked up and saw the beautiful altocumulus cloud above.
I quickly went to my roof terrace to have a better view of the cloud formation.
Altocumulus clouds are small mid-level layers or patches of clouds, called cloudlets, which most commonly exist in the shape of rounded clumps. Altocumulus are made up of a mix of ice and water, giving them a slightly more ethereal appearance than the big and fluffy lower level cumulus.
Nature is beautiful!

20 Jul 2024 - Rare MEW OREO!

Recently there is a collaboration between Oreo and Pokemon.  Each pack of Oreo Pokémon cookies comes with 16 random Pokémon embossments.  The rarest embossment is none other than MEW!  Guess what, I got one this morning.  :-)
I saw people selling it for a few hundred bucks on eBay!  Can it really sell?

7 Jul 2024 - Tengah Districts (Under Construction)

We sent Jerlene to her classmate's place in Tengah district early this morning as they need to finish up a project.  Tengah is a new residential estate where many areas are still under construction.  Tengah will be the first HDB town that is planned with smart technologies town-wide from the beginning. The designs of the housing districts will focus on green, sustainable features and community-centric spaces.
As mentioned, we could see construction everywhere, including the MRT station.  Residents who had moved into their new homes here must have felt the inconvenience now because the infrastructure around the district is simply not ready.
We drove to a nearby Plantation Plaza to see what's there.  It is supposed to be a standalone new-generation Neighbourhood Centre that houses commercial amenities including a supermarket, food court, F&B eateries, retail and service shops, as well as enrichment centres.  However, the only stores that were opened were the food court and Giant supermarket.  Most shop spaces were empty except a few that were under renovation.
As there isn't much to explore, we left soon after.
