Hạ Long Bay has an area of around 1,553 square kilometers, including 1,960–2,000 islets, most of which are limestone.
The bay consists of a dense cluster of some 1,600 limestone monolithic islands each topped with thick jungle vegetation, rising spectacularly from the ocean. Several of the islands are hollow, with enormous caves.
As we sailed through jungle-blanketed islands, it reminded me of our trip last year when we cruised through Milford Sound in New Zealand.
The first stop of our Ha Long Bay day tour was Bo Hon Island. Here we will be visiting Sung Sot Cave, the largest among all of Halong's caves. Proceed to the next blog post for details.
