21 Dec 2014 - Taiwan Trip Day 8: Xin Bei Tou (新北投) Hot Spring and Hell Valley (地热谷)

We started exploring Xinbeitou (新北投) after the slow train ride from Beitou station.  We crossed the road and came to Beitou Park.  Following the pavement will lead us to various places of interest.  The first building we saw was the Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch.  It is a two-storey building and notable as being constructed to be an eco-friendly green building.

Slightly further down the pavement is the Beitou Hot Spring Museum (北投温泉博物馆).
Admission to the museum is free. We need to take off our shoes and wear the slippers provided while touring the museum.
The museum was originally constructed by the Japanese in 1913 and was the largest hot spring public bath in East Asia at that time.  The building combines Roman style arches and columns with Japanese interior design.
The following bath reminds me of the public bath that we saw in Bath, UK, some years back.
Beitou area is not only about hot spring.  In fact, one of the main attraction in this museum is the rare 800kg Hokutolite stone (北投石).  This is the one and only mineral that is named after a Taiwanese
district.
We spent slightly less than an hour in the museum before moving on to our next attraction, Thermal Valley.  On our way, we saw a public bath (千禧汤) where one just need to pay TWD40 to enter and dip into the water.  Of course, you had to be in your swimming attire.
As we walked down the road, we saw smoke rising from a little stream.  We knew that we were now very near to the Thermal Valley.
True enough, just round the corner, we reached the entrance of Beitou Thermal Valley (地热谷).
Here's a brief description of Thermal Valley.
The is the first time Jerlene and Javier had come so close to a hot spring.
They were amazed by the smoke rising from the surface of the water.  And of course the unforgettable smell.
Here are more details about this green sulphur spring.

21 Dec 2014 - Taiwan Trip Day 8: Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂)

ECFA hotel, like Diary of Taipei hotel, occupies the top two floors of this building.
Breakfast was provided in another branch just across the street (below).
In the morning, we planned to visit Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂).  We took the MRT from Ximen station directly to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall station.  The first building we saw was the National Theater.
Behind the building is a huge open space known as the Liberty Square (自由广场).
This site is important to the development of Taiwan's democracy.
The other end from Liberty Square is the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall.
This is the famous monument, landmark and tourists attractions erected in memory of Chiang Kai-Shek, the former president of Republic of China.
From the Memorial Hall, we had a great view of Liberty Square right in front of us, with National Theater and National Concert Hall flanking on the left and right respectively.
We were unable to enter the Memorial Hall itself because it was closed for maintenance till the end of 2016.  As it started to drizzle, we quickly left the place and went to a nearby food court for lunch.  We had beef noodles (牛肉刀削面) and it was delicious.
After lunch, we took the MRT to Xinbeitou station to explore that area which is full of hotspring.  During the train journey, we saw the famous Taiwan Grand Hotel (圆山大饭店) from a distance.
We need to change to another line at Beitou station.  Xinbeitou is just one stop away.  The train on this line only travels between Beitou and Xinbeitou station.  Some of the train cabins had two LED screens showing the history and development of this area.  Interesing.

20 Dec 2014 - Taiwan Trip Day 7: ECFA Hotel Kunming Branch (愛客發時尚旅館) at Ximending (西门町)

We stayed in ECFA Hotel Kunming Branch (愛客發昆明馆) for the last two nights in Taiwan.  The hotel had actually reserved their largest room for us where we need to take the stairs up one level.  However, after seeing that we got two kids, he asked if we would like to change to a smaller room but do not need to climb up the stairs.  We decided to view both the rooms first and after viewing, the decision was unanimous.  The largest room it will be!  Once Jerlene and Javier saw this room, they love it and immediately shouted:"We want this room, we want this room!".
Below is the Ximending map that shows our hotel's location.  Although the location is not as good as Diary of Taipei Hotel which we stayed previously, the room is so much more comfortable.  Anyway, it's actually just a 5mins walk from this hotel to Ximending walking street.
Once again, Jerlene and Javier refused to follow us to the street, especially now that the room was so comfortable.  So be it...... :-P

We did not try out 阿宗面线 previously due to the long queue.  As we left with two more days in Taipei, we decided to try it out tonight no matter what.  Though the queue was long, the serving was actually pretty fast.
Finally got to try this well known Taiwan mee-sua.  Yum yum yum......
At the northern exit of Hanzhong Street (汗中街), there is a stall selling white bittergourd juice.  This one tastes a lot better than the one we tried at Shilin night market as it is very refreshing and not too bitter.  I too fell in love with it.
After trying out a few more street food, we decided to walked back to our room for our legs to rest.  There was too much walking done today.

20 Dec 2014 - Taiwan Trip Day 7: Taiwan University Royal Palm Drive (台大椰林大道)

After about an hour drive from Ching Tung (箐桐), we finally reached Taipei City.  As we passed by the University of Taiwan, 潘先生 asked if we wanted to pay a quick visit to the university.  We said ok and he drove us into the university compound through the famous Royal Palm Drive (椰林大道).  I heard of the song 《椰林大道》more than 20 years back but I did not know it's within Taiwan University till today.  The road was not as bad as the lyrics say where there were lots of holes.  Probably that's the situation 20 years ago.
This is the entrance to the university.
It's pretty late by now and it's time for us to check in to our hotel in Ximending (西门町).

20 Dec 2014 - Taiwan Trip Day 7: Ching Tung (箐桐), LED Sky Lantern

The main reason 潘先生 brought us to Ching Tung (箐桐) was to watch the LED Sky Lantern Show (电子天灯秀).  He dropped us right in front of the big LED screen, which is of the shape of a sky lantern while he drove away to find a place to park his car.  This is actually not just a show.  Tourists like us can actually purchase a ticket to write our wishes on a piece of paper.  And whatever we have drawn on the paper will be projected as it is on the LED screen after the show.
The 5-6 minutes LED show started with an introduction of Pingxi Sky Lantern and how it comes about.
And immediately after the show, wishes written down by tourists began to appear on the LED screen, simulating a rising sky lantern.  It is interesting to see such high tech stuff in a pretty old town.
After the show, we took a walk along the railway track and through the old street.  Once again, 潘先生 bought some 茶叶蛋 while we waited for him to drive his car over.
It's time to head back to Taipei now,
