Melbourne Aquarium is about a 20mins walk from Southgate area. The building is designed such that it resembles a ship moored to the river. We reached the entrance at about 3pm and we will have 3 hours in this attraction.
Set on the banks of the picturesque Yarra River, this is the only Southern Ocean aquarium in Australia. Created 20 metres under the river's surface is a marine world where you will meet many of the marvellous creatures from our oceans in an interactive, eye-opening experience. Stand in the middle of the world's biggest fish bowl where sharks and stingrays surround you.
The moment we entered from the ticket counter, we immediately come to a pretty new expansion which features exhibits with King Penguins and gentoo Penguins, as well as many other Antarctic fish, a first for Australia. The exhibits also feature real ice and snow to simulate Antarctic conditions, and take visitors on an expedition to Antarctica.
Both Jerlene and Javier got very excited when they saw the penguins. I quickly took out my camera and started shooting. When Jerlene saw what I was doing, she also took out her camera and pretended to take pictures of the penguins. We had lots of fun just at this particular exhibit.
There are other exhibits which features various marine creatures such as Jellyfish, Butterfly fish, Seahorse etc.
Jerlene also had a chance to hold a small starfish by her hand at the touch pool.
The Aquarium has four worlds to explore, namely Antarctica, Weird & Wonderful, River to Reef and Sharks Alive. At the Shark Alive exhibit, we had a 360 degree views of sharks, stingrays, turtles and thousands of schooling fish in the 2.2 million litre Oceanarium. It's also a great resting place for all of us. I also took the opportunity to charge my camera battery while resting.
We left the Aquarium before 6pm. Initially we thought of walking to Eureka Tower but again the sunset was about 3 hours away. So we decided to plan for it the next day. Instead we walked back to Queen Victoria Market where they will a Night market.
