1 Dec 2018 - NZ Day 1: Hot Water Beach

As planned, we started walking along the boardwalk from the Holiday Park to Hot Water Beach at about 6:30pm.
After a 10 minutes short walk, we arrived at the beach and was able to enjoy the view of the South Pacific Ocean.

To get to the beach where the Hot Water is, we needed to paddle across a shallow stream.  We had to be extra careful while paddling across the stream as the water current was pretty strong.
Once we crossed over the stream, we could see a crowd of people at a distance.  And that must be where the Hot Water was seeping out on the beach.
These people were very well prepared and equipped with shovels to dig into the sand where they could soak themselves in the shallow hole filled with warm water.
Hot Water Beach is situated on Coromandel Peninsula and is famous for the natural hot springs that seep up from the volcanic fissures below.  For two hours either side of low tide, one could find a hot spot and dig a pool to relax in the warm therapeutic waters and at the same time , enjoy the superb ocean view.
Wonder where the hot water comes from?  Below is the scientific explanation.
As we did not intend to soak ourselves in the hot water, Jerlene and Javier tried to "steal" the hot water from those holes dug by others.  They were so amazed and wondered where the water actually comes from.  While enjoying the warm water, we had to be very careful because the water at certain hot spot can have a temperature as high as 64°C.
In this trip, I brought along a drone and had my first attempt in flying it overseas for some amazing bird's eye view images.  Following photos were all taken by the drone.
To be frank, this is only my 2nd actual attempt to operate a drone outdoor and first time overseas in such a windy place.  At one point I had issue trying to descend the drone likely due to the strong updraft.  Eventually it ran out of battery and started to land by itself.  I almost lost it as it landed by the edge of those trees that you can see above on the right.  It was such a relief when I managed to retrieve it.  We spent almost 2 hours playing on the beach before walking back to the holiday park as it started to get dark.  Soon after we reached our unit, it started to rain heavily again.  We wondered what happened to those people who were still soaking at the beach.
