From the main highway, we turned into a gravel road that leads us to the parking area at the entrance. Once again, our 4-wheel drive car proved to be very useful.
This place is really deserted and we were the only ones around. I guess not many people are aware of this historical landmark in New Zealand.
It's a short 10 minutes walk to reach the Lower Redoubt.
There is a lookout tower where we could climb up and have an unblock view of the surrounding.
A redoubt (historically redout) is a fort or fort system usually consisting of an enclosed defensive emplacement outside a larger fort, usually relying on earthworks, although some are constructed of stone or brick.
We were able to walk in the ditches of the redoubt. It's like walking in a mini maze.Jerlene and Javier decided to join me in the redoubt while mommy took photos for us.
There is an Upper Redoubt which is a 15 minutes walk away. We did not attempt to walk there as we needed to save time in order to embark on our walking adventure in other parts of Tongariro today.
From Te Pōrere Redoubt, we drove towards Whakapapa Village. On the way, we could see Mount Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom in LOTR movies) at a distance but its peak was covered in clouds.
The drive towards to Whakapapa Village was a joy as the surrounding landscape was very scenic. As we were getting closer, clouds started forming above us. Let's hope it would clear up later when we went on the expedition.
