We had our lunch at a food court in a shopping mall before walking to West Lake.
Listed as a World Heritage Site in 2011 by UNESCO, West Lake is the only lake heritage site in China. UNESCO describes it as “has influenced garden design in the rest of China as well as Japan and Korea over the centuries” and “reflecting an idealized fusion between humans and nature”.
West Lake is divided into five parts by three causeways, and it comprises lots of pagodas, temples, pavilions, gardens, causeways, as well as artificial islands. Our original plan was to take the walking trail all the way to Leifeng Pagoda (雷峰塔). However, after walking for more than half an hour, we were still no where near. As such, we decided to return to Hubin Qingyu (湖滨晴雨) and take a boat ride across the lake to a man-made island.
