Walking from Nanjing Road East towards the Bund after nightfall was a journey through a sensory time machine, where the neon energy of modern retail seamlessly melted into the golden, cinematic grandeur of old Shanghai. As we crossed the final intersection before the waterfront, the hyper-modern neon abruptly faded, replaced by a warm, sophisticated amber glow. The architecture shifted from modern glass to heavy, majestic stone. Suddenly, we were standing under the shadow of the Fairmont Peace Hotel. Its iconic green pyramidal copper roof is dramatically lit from below, slicing into the dark night sky.
The Peace Hotel is not just one building, but a historic architectural pair split right down the middle by the bustling Nanjing Road East. They operate as two separate luxury properties facing The Bund. The North Building is Fairmont Peace Hotel while the South Building is the Swatch Art Peace Hotel.
Leaving the Peace Hotel behind, we stepped into the wide-open expanse of the Bund’s waterfront. On our left and right, a majestic, unbroken wall of grand, neo-classical stone palaces bathed in a uniform, brilliant gold light. They looked like a row of glowing crowns tracing the riverbank.
As we climbed the granite steps to the raised pedestrian promenade across the road, the full panoramic view hits us all at once. Directly across the river, the pitch-black water of the Huangpu River mirrored a hyper-futuristic wonderland. The skyscrapers of Pudong, including the twisting Shanghai Tower and the pink-ringed Oriental Pearl Tower, shot laser lights and massive LED animations into the clouds.
Standing here, we were caught perfectly in the middle of Shanghai's dual soul where a century of colonial history glowing behind us, and the electric future dazzled right in front of us.
We did not stay at the Bund for too long as it was simply too crowded.
