2 Dec 2018 - NZ Day 2: Amazing Cathedral Cove (Narnia Filming Site)

After checking out of TOP 10 Holiday Park at Hot Water Beach, we drove to the Visitor Car Park on Pa Road and took a shuttle service to the start of Cathedral Cove walking trail.
The shuttle only costs $5 return per person, $3 for a child and $10 for a family (2 adults 2 children).
There are a few walking tracks here but the most popular of course is the Cathedral Cove Walk, which is about 45 minutes one-way.
From the starting point, we could vaguely see where we will be heading.
 Let's go, my little rangers!
There were a lot of photo opportunities along the way which made this walk very interesting.  We were glad that we came today as the weather was much better as compared to yesterday.
If you looked closely at the surrounding, you can see many beautiful flora and fauna.
The difficult part of this walk is that there are many up slope and down slope, which can be quite challenging for those who are not physically fit.
After an hour of walk, we finally reached the beach at the foot of the hill.
As we walked through the arch and exited at the other side, we suddenly found this place extremely familiar.  To the left is the Cove, perfectly framing the rock rising up out of the sea.
For those who had watched the movie "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian", you would have realized that this was one of the filming sites of the movie.  The scene where the Pevensies return to the ruined Cair Paravel was shot here.  The filmmakers chose this location because it had a tunnel-like arch, which echoed the train tunnel the children go into before being summoned back into Narnia.  To help you recall that scene, here's a short clip of the movie at Cathedral Cove.
Since we were now in Narnia, it's time to take lots of photos of this precious moments.
And not forgetting my drone, I began to take some aerial shots of this place.  Can you spot my drone in the below 2 photos?
Following few shots were taken from my drone.  The video still need some editing and once it's done, I'll post it in an upcoming posts.
Jerlene and Javier were having fun playing sands on the beach while I busy flying my drone.  We spent about an hour at this magical place.  As the heat was getting intense we decided to leave the cove to avoid getting sun burn.  We took the same track to return to the starting point.
Along the way, we saw quite a few possum's traps setup by the trees.  I was once told by a local during my previous visit to New Zealand that Possum is considered a pest.
Jerlene and me walked much faster and while waiting for mommy and Javier, Jerlene had her moment of 看海的日子.  :-)
We took the shuttle service back to the visitor car park where our rented car was.  As it was lunch time, we drove to a nearby food outlet to have our lunch.  Mommy could not resist the ice cream once she saw it!
Our next destination was a farm up in a mountain near Thames.  The journey is about 1.5 hrs.  Our rented car came with an on board CarPlay software with a dashboard that allowed us to connect our phone to it.  It even allows us to play some of the common apps such as Google Map, which was extremely useful.
Before driving up the mountain, we decided to buy some food, drinks and snacks at Pak n Save supermarket in Thames.  We then contacted the farm owner (Scott) to inform him that we were driving to the farm now so that he can get prepared.

1 Dec 2018 - NZ Day 1: Hot Water Beach

As planned, we started walking along the boardwalk from the Holiday Park to Hot Water Beach at about 6:30pm.
After a 10 minutes short walk, we arrived at the beach and was able to enjoy the view of the South Pacific Ocean.

To get to the beach where the Hot Water is, we needed to paddle across a shallow stream.  We had to be extra careful while paddling across the stream as the water current was pretty strong.
Once we crossed over the stream, we could see a crowd of people at a distance.  And that must be where the Hot Water was seeping out on the beach.
These people were very well prepared and equipped with shovels to dig into the sand where they could soak themselves in the shallow hole filled with warm water.
Hot Water Beach is situated on Coromandel Peninsula and is famous for the natural hot springs that seep up from the volcanic fissures below.  For two hours either side of low tide, one could find a hot spot and dig a pool to relax in the warm therapeutic waters and at the same time , enjoy the superb ocean view.
Wonder where the hot water comes from?  Below is the scientific explanation.
As we did not intend to soak ourselves in the hot water, Jerlene and Javier tried to "steal" the hot water from those holes dug by others.  They were so amazed and wondered where the water actually comes from.  While enjoying the warm water, we had to be very careful because the water at certain hot spot can have a temperature as high as 64°C.
In this trip, I brought along a drone and had my first attempt in flying it overseas for some amazing bird's eye view images.  Following photos were all taken by the drone.
To be frank, this is only my 2nd actual attempt to operate a drone outdoor and first time overseas in such a windy place.  At one point I had issue trying to descend the drone likely due to the strong updraft.  Eventually it ran out of battery and started to land by itself.  I almost lost it as it landed by the edge of those trees that you can see above on the right.  It was such a relief when I managed to retrieve it.  We spent almost 2 hours playing on the beach before walking back to the holiday park as it started to get dark.  Soon after we reached our unit, it started to rain heavily again.  We wondered what happened to those people who were still soaking at the beach.

1 Dec 2018 - NZ Day 1: Hot Water Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park

At about 2pm, we arrived at our accommodation for tonight.  We checked in to Hot Water Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park, which is located 700m from Hot Water Beach, a popular surfing destination on the stunning Coromandel Peninsula.
We booked a Ensuite unit which comes with a queen bed in an open-plan lounge with a separate room with a bunk bed.  Full ensuite with linen, towels, tea and coffee making facilities, fridge, microwave, heater and TV.  Most importantly, an attached bathroom.
There is also a barbeque pit on a large deck right outside of the unit.
After the long drive, we took a brief rest in the room.  Jerlene and Javier had been looking forward to December as they cannot wait to start opening up the hidden "treasures" on the Advent Calendars that we had bought last week.
Family owned and operated, this Holiday Park offers a full range of accommodation options and large sheltered sites in a natural bush and park setting with its own microclimate.  We spent sometimes exploring the site.  Javier challenged me to a game of chess, a big one!
After which, Jerlene and Javier had great fun jumping on the huge bouncing pillow.
Our original plan for this afternoon was to visit Cathedral Cove, which was a 10 minutes drive from Hot Water Beach.  Once we reached there, we realized there is no parking space around the starting point of the walking trail.  As it was raining at that time, we decided to come back tomorrow, hopefully with better weather.  On our way back to Hot Water Beach, we stopped by a lookout point with spectacular view of the ocean.
The best time to visit Hot Water Beach is two hours before and after low tide, which happened today at about 8:40pm.  As such, we bought some food from the park's cafe and had our dinner in our unit till around 6pm before walking to the beach.

1 Dec 2018 - 9 Days New Zealand (North Island) Self-Drive Itinerary

We arrived at Auckland early this morning and its time to bid farewell to our wonderful ship that we called "home" for the past 10 days.
Taking one last look at our stateroom before disembarking the ship.  We opted to carry our own luggage out of the ship.  This option allowed us to have more flexibility in terms of time of disembarkation.
Jerlene and Javier will miss all the new friends that they had made at Adventure Ocean Kids's Club.  Javier decided to take a few photos of the ship before leaving the port.
After filling up our water bottles at the drinking station, we tried to make our way to the car rental office to pick up our rented car.
Initially we thought we could walk to the office but after crossing a few streets up a slope with our luggage under the light rain, we gave up.  We then decided to call for Uber which brought us to the office in 5 mins.
I actually booked a medium-sized car for this trip but we had a pleasant surprise.  The car rental company actually gave us a free upgrade to a 4WD SUV (Mitsubishi Outlander).  This is fated because in actual fact, we do need a 4WD car to get to a farm up in the mountain tomorrow.  Without a 4WD, it is going to be quite inconvenient.  I will explain the reason in one of my upcoming posts on the farm, so stay tune.
After picking up our car and did the usual checks, we drove out of Auckland city towards Coromandel Peninsula.  As we drove into a small town called Tairua, it started raining quite heavily.  As such, we decided to take a break and make a stop here to have our lunch.
