The Arashiyama bamboo grove, also known as the Sagano bamboo grove (sagano chikurin), is located west of Kyoto. Prior to this trip, I consulted ChatGPT about this place and it recommended us to visit the grove in the evening at this time of the year because it will be beautifully illuminated.
As such, our plan was to visit the bamboo grove after the sky turned dark.
And guess what, we were in total darkness as we strolled through the bamboo grove. We continued further hoping that at some point it did get illuminated. However, after walking for more than 20 minutes, it remained the same.
We could only console ourselves that we were not alone. We saw several groups of visitors as we strolled through the grove and everyone was holding their phones up with the lights on.
Though we did not see the beautifully illuminated bamboo grove, how many people actually have such an experience to walk through the grove in darkness? Haha......
We returned to the train station by walking through a quiet residential area.
We learnt quite a few lessons for our trip to Arashiyama today. Firstly, do not believe the locals about time required to reach a certain place. We should always have some buffer by doubling the time required. Secondly, never never 100% trust the results of ChatGPT. :-P
