While most visitors flock to Liziba Station just to watch the light rail train glide through a residential building, only a few step off the beaten path, we decided to explore the historic bomb shelters carved directly into the rugged cliffsides. We stepped into the cool embrace of Chongqing’s underground history at the Liziba Bomb Shelter with its striking cliffside "Soul of the Rock" (岩之魂) relief culture wall, this is where wartime resilience meets modern urban creativity.
Stepping inside the Liziba Bomb Shelter immediately transported us from the blazing heat of Chongqing into a cool, cave-like underground world layered with history and local color. Colorful, vibrant wish walls lined the entryways, densely covered with hand-written wooden tags and messages from global travelers.
The paths were decorated with vintage wooden tables and chairs, old-school televisions, retro electric fans, and historic school emblems. Sections of the rocky cliffs are lined with black-and-white photos documenting Chongqing's resilience and local 20th-century life.
There was even an Earthenware Cellars (Wine Storage) in the tunnel. Branching paths revealed massive, ancient clay wine jars lined directly against the subterranean walls, filling parts of the cave with a rich, fermented aroma.
Deeper tunnels split off into immersive photo corridors, including one segment that preserves the historic ruins of a Republican-era cotton mill.
