Tucked into the steep slopes of the Nan'an District right next to Longmenhao Old Street lies Xiaohaoli (下浩里). If Longmenhao is a grand monument to Chongqing’s treaty-port history, Xiaohaoli is the living, breathing soul of its old residential lanes. Originally an ancient salt-merchant hub that fell into decades of quiet decay, it was recently resurrected as a vibrant cultural sanctuary.
Tucked deep into the heart of the district's vertical maze is the Xiahaoli Waterfall. The water originates from the higher mountain tiers, seemingly disappearing under the surrounding historical buildings before dramatically bursting out over a jagged, moss-covered stone cliff face. It gracefully tumbles down into a rocky catch-basin outfitted with a vintage decorative wooden waterwheel, before continuing down the hillside as a tumbling rocky creek.
Surrounded by dense ivy, overhanging trees, and rustic wooden stilted houses, the waterfall zone earned the local reputation of a peaceful "urban sanctuary" right in the middle of a massive concrete jungle.
At around 7 PM, Xiaohaoli underwent a dramatic shift. The weathered gray bricks, crumbling mossy stone steps, and winding alleyways were suddenly washed in a warm, amber glow.
We left the place at about 7:30pm and headed back to the subway station.
The train was unexpectedly empty at that time.
We had our dinner at 乡村基, which is just next to our hotel.
