Our next stop, Seal Bay, is one of the main highlights of the day. With its unspoiled wilderness and stunning beauty, it is no surprise that Kangaroo Island is consistently in South Australia’s top ten tourist destinations, as voted on Trip Advisor. And no trip to Kangaroo Island is complete without a visit to Seal Bay.
Visitors at Seal Bay can either go on the self-guided boardwalk (free) or guided beach walk tour. We booked our guided tour at 2pm and since there was still some time, we decided to go onto the boardwalk that is 900m return. The boardwalk meanders through limestone cliffs and dunes, and showcases the stunning coastal scenery for which Seal Bay is famous.
Along the boardwalk, we saw the remain of a whale. The boardwalk provides a great view over the sand dunes where the sea lions rest and play. At the viewing platforms, we were able to watch Australian sea-lions surfing the waves or sunning themselves on the beach.
The boardwalk lookout also offers amazing views of Cape Gantheaume and the wilderness area.
After spending 15 mins at the lookout admiring the awesome views, we walked back to the Visitor Centre and got ready for the guided tour.
There were some interesting displays at the visitor centre.By following the guided tour, we were able to walk all the way down to the beach to have a closer encounter with the seals.
As we walked towards the beach, we saw a pup sleeping under a staircase.
Throughout the tour, our group tried to keep ourselves about 10m away from the seals in order not to disturb them in their natural habitat. This is our first time coming so close to wild seals.Quite a number of seals were resting under the sun at that time while some others were having fun "fighting" each other and going out for a "surf".
