16 Nov 2022 - Day 3: (Kangaroo Island) Cape Willoughby Lighthouse

Kangaroo Island is seven times the size of Singapore.  Our first stop on Kangaroo Island is Cape Willoughby Lightstation, located 27km southeast of Penneshaw.  It's a 30 mins drive from Penneshaw where the ferry terminal is.
As we walked towards the lighthouse from the car park, we had some awesome views of the sea and cliff all around us.
To get to the light house, we got to pass through a visitor centre, which includes a fascinating museum reading room.
Situated in the easternmost point of Kangaroo Island, Cape Willoughby Lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be built in South Australia in 1852. It stands 27 metres high with 102 steps to the lookout tower and offers stunning panoramic view across Backstairs Passage and the Kangaroo Island coastline.  It was one of the last manned lighthouses in Australia. It was officially automated (unmanned) in 1992.
As there was no tour running at that time, we did not get to climb up to the top of the lighthouse.  As such, we walked around the compound and continued to enjoy the beautiful sceneries all around.
Access to the lighthouse is only via Cape Willoughby Road (below), in which most part of it is unsealed road.  Though the drive was a bit rough, it's still quite manageable.  We had driven on dirt roads which were much worse than this.
