19 Nov 2022 - Day 6: (Mt Gambier) Umpherston Sinkhole

There are a number of popular tourist attractions in Mount Gambier.  First, we visited the Umpherston Sinkhole.  It's just a short drive from our accommodation.  Visitors can appreciate its beauty from the viewing platform at the top of the sinkhole or walk down into the sinkhole along the terraces and behind the hanging vines.
Umpherston Sinkhole/Balumbul, also known, as the sunken garden was once a cave formed through dissolution of the limestone. The sinkhole was created when the top of the chamber collapsed downwards. Now the topsoil down on the floor forms the perfect environment for the sunken garden.
The Umpherston Sinkhole was made into a garden by James Umpherston in 1886.  The sculptures at Umpherston Sinkhole are inspired by the geological processes of the region that resulted in the formation of sinkholes.
The sinkhole offers an array of scenic spots and a beautiful garden.  It presents us with a very unique experience. The garden is open every day and remains open until late in the evening.
As we left the place, we passed by the iconic Leopard tank at the RSL Mount Gambier and District Bowling Club.
