16 Nov 2022 - Day 3: (Adelaide) Port Willunga Beach Caves

Our next stop, Port Willunga,  is a semi-rural suburb of Adelaide.  The white sandy beach at Port Willunga is beautiful, rugged, large and uncrowded
The Star of Greece shipwreck is another popular attraction on the Port Willunga beach. Originally constructed in Belfast, the three-masted ship got caught in a severe storm in July of 1888. Although it was just a few hundred meters away from the shore, the ship ultimately sank, and it remains there to this day.  When the tide is low, you can actually see the mast sticking out of the sea.
There is a plaque dedicated to the memory of the crew who lost their lives during the shipwreck.
We then took the stairs down to the beach hoping to find the old jetty and beach caves,
However, both the jetty and beach caves were nowhere to be found.  We quickly do a quick search on google map and realized that the caves are actually further down south.
We then drove slightly down the road and turned in to the next car park.  As we walked down the path towards the beach, we knew we were now at the right place because we could see the remains of the old jetty from afar.
The sight of the scattered pylons with the turquoise water in the back is absolutely stunning.
The pylons, also known as 'the sticks', scattered at Port Willunga beach are all that remains of this coastal village's early days as a grain port. It was originally built back in 1853, and at the time it was the busiest port in this area.
As we turned around from the old jetty, we immediately saw the unique Port Willunga Beach Caves, one of the most photographed tourist attractions in Australia.
These are man-made caves that were hewn into the face of the cliff, and they were used by fishermen to store boats previously.  Nowadays people use them as a place to sit and have a picnic when they want some shade from the sun.
These beach caves are really unique and definitely Instagram worthy!
We filled up petrol at Aldinga Town before continuing our journey to Cape Jervis to board the Sealink Ferry to Kangaroo Island!
