22 Nov 2022 - Day 9: (Great Ocean Road) The Grotto

Our next stop, The Grotto, which is less than 10 minutes' drive from Bay of Martyrs.  After parking our car at the carpark, we headed down the walkway towards the upper-viewing deck. The path is a mix of compact gravel and boardwalk, and can be completed by visitors of all fitness levels.
Along the way, we saw bubbles rising from the edge of the cliff which is amazing.
From the upper viewing platform, we saw a wooden stair leading down to The Grotto at eye level.
Before walking down the stairs, we witnessed the power of nature where strong waves crashing onto the cliff sides.  Watch the video below to see the real strength of the waves.
We then continued down the wooden staircase to sea-level below, where we enjoyed the Grotto up close.
The Grotto is one of Victoria’s most unique rock formations as well as a popular tourist attraction. It features distinct geological elements, combining a cave, sink-hole and archway all into one. Hundreds of years of crashing waves and high winds have eroded the rocks for hundreds of years. The result is a caved-sinkhole within the limestone cliffs.
Here we can look through the archway and admire the smooth rock pools inside. The calm, clear water inside the limestone pools contrasts the crashing waves of the ocean behind it.
Watch the power of mother nature in the following video.
