12 Dec 2025 - Local Snacks and Short Visit to Cherating before Dinner

We chatted for a while before our cousin brought us to a local makan place to have some authentic local snacks.
Following is Laksam, a traditional Malaysian noodle dish particularly popular in the east coast states of Kelantan and Terengganu. It features thick, rolled rice noodles served in a creamy, white coconut milk-based gravy. The gravy is typically flavored with flaked fish (such as mackerel), shallots, ginger, garlic, and tamarind slices. Unlike other types of laksa, it does not use curry paste, resulting in a milder, savory, and slightly sweet flavor profile. The dish is commonly served with fresh vegetable toppings, such as thinly sliced cabbage and cucumber, and a side of spicy sambal for added heat.
Next, we had a plate of Satar, a traditional Malaysian snack from Terengganu. It consists of spiced fish meat (usually sardines) mixed with ingredients like shredded coconut, chilies, onions, and other spices. The mixture is wrapped in banana leaves, folded into a pyramid shape, and then grilled over hot coals.
Otak-otak was another snack we had. Unlike the Singapore version which tastes more like fish cake, the Kemaman version uses ground fish slices marinated in spices (shallots, onions, ginger, chillies) and is wrapped in a banana leaf before being grilled.
Another one is called Pulut Panggang or Pulut Lepa, a traditional Kemaman savory snack.  It consists of glutinous rice that has been steamed with coconut milk. The rice is stuffed with a filling, typically spiced mackerel fish floss (serunding ikan kembung). The filled sticky rice is wrapped in banana leaves and then grilled over flames, which gives it a distinct smoky flavor and fragrance.
Finally we had a bowl of Kemaman version of Ice Kachang (Ais Kacang). It is often referred to by its acronym, ABC, which stands for ais batu campur ("mixed shaved ice") in Malay. The dessert typically includes ingredients like red beans, sweet corn, grass jelly, and palm seeds (attap chee) buried under the shaved ice. The version here includes two scoops of vanilla ice cream.
After we were done with the wonderful local snacks, we drove to Cherating to enjoy some sea breeze by the beach.
Many visitors came here to do surfing.
We made friend with a beautiful cat here.
Before leaving Cherating, we drove to a nearby Fireflies (Kelip Kelip in Malay) Sanctuary to take a look. The ticket office was closed so we walked to the jetty where we had a nice view of River Cherating. There were lots of mangroves along the river.
We ended the day with a sumptuous dinner at Restoran Leong Kemaman.
