25 Dec 2025 - KHH Day 5: Cijin Old Street (旗津老街)

After stepping off the ferry at Cijin Ferry Pier, we were immediately drawn into the energy of Cijin Old Street (旗津老街).
One of the island’s most meaningful landmarks is the Cijin Mazu Temple (旗津天后宮). Dedicated to Mazu, the sea goddess revered by coastal communities across Taiwan, the temple has long been a place where fishermen and sailors come to pray for safety, calm seas, and good fortune. Given Cijin’s history as a fishing island, the presence of a Mazu temple feels not just natural, but essential. Despite being close to the busy old street, the mood inside the temple is quiet and reverent.
Cijin Old Street is best known for its fresh seafood. Beyond seafood, the old street was packed with classic Taiwanese snacks and island-style refreshments. Interspersed between food stalls were small shops selling shell crafts, postcards, hats, beachwear, and Cijin-themed souvenirs.
We had a quick simple lunch at 7-Eleven store and began our hike to Kaohsiung Lighthouse.
