25 Dec. KHH Day 5: Kaohsiung Lighthouse (高雄燈塔)

Following the nice and relaxed coastal walk, we began our ascent to Kaohsiung Lighthouse. It started with a series of steps and as we went higher, the entire Cijin district became visible right behind us.
Perched on a hill at the northern tip of Cijin Island and overlooking the vast expanse of Kaohsiung Port, the Kaohsiung Lighthouse is more than just a scenic viewpoint. It is a working maritime landmark with a long history.
Built in 1883, Kaohsiung Lighthouse is the only white octagonal lighthouse made of brick in Taiwan. The 15.2-meter-tall tower is topped by a black dome and encircled by a balcony commanding a sweeping view of Kaohsiung City. The lighthouse serves an important role in ensuring the safe transit of merchant ships at Kaohsiung Harbor. The more than century old building is designated as a municipal heritage.
From the viewing areas around the lighthouse, we were rewarded with a panoramic view of Cijin Island on one side while a calm and endless open sea on the other.
After we were done admiring the breathtaking views, we followed a short walking trail to Qihou Fort (旗後砲台). We passed by the Kaohsiung Lighthouse Weather Station along the way.
Low shrubs and coastal vegetation lined the path, and gaps in the greenery offered repeated glimpses of the sea, each slightly different as the angle changed. Within minutes, we arrived at the Fort.
