25 Dec 2025 - KHH Day 5: Cijin Beach (旗津海水浴場) and Rainbow Church (旗津彩虹教堂)

From Cihou Fort, we descended Mount Cihou and arrived at Cijin Beach where a long sweep of sand framed by the ocean on one side and low coastal structures on the other.
Unlike tropical islands with coral-based white sand, Cijin’s sand is rich in dark minerals, especially iron and magnetite. When waves and currents sort the sediment, the heavier, darker minerals remain on the beach, giving the sand its distinctive colour.
The Taiwan Strait gives Cijin Beach a lively character. The wind is often strong, especially in the afternoon, carrying the scent of salt and seaweed. Unlike resort beaches, Cijin Beach felt casual and local, more about atmosphere than spectacle. Standing here, with nothing blocking the view, the city felt far away.
We took a break at a shelter before strolling further down the beach towards Rainbow Church. It's actually pretty far. I suggested to rent a 4-person bike but both Jerlene and Javier preferred to walk.
Rainbow Church is one of Cijin’s most photographed landmarks. With its bold rainbow stripes and modern, minimalist shape, it contrasts sharply with the muted tones of sand and sea. People gathered around it not for worship, but for moments such as proposals, portraits, quiet reflection, or simply capturing the perfect seaside shot.
The entire Cijin beach stretches for nearly 3 km along the island’s western coast. We were not prepared to cover that distance, but we decided to walk down further until we reached Cijin Pearl.
