27 Dec 2025 - TNN Day 7: Asakusa Shopping Center (淺草青春新天地) and Tainan Art Museum (台南市美術館)

Originally built during the Japanese colonial period, Asakusa Shopping Center was once one of Tainan’s most fashionable commercial complexes. It was inspired by Tokyo’s lively Asakusa district, hence the name.
For decades, it served as a social and entertainment hub before gradually fading with time. In recent years, the space has been revitalized into a youth-oriented creative plaza, blending old architecture with indie culture.
Within walking distance of each other, Asakusa Shopping Center and Tainan Art Museum perfectly showcase this contrast where one rooted in Japanese-era commerce, the other a bold celebration of contemporary art.
The Tainan Art Museum actually consists of two buildings. Building 1 was originally constructed in 1931 as a police station during the Japanese colonial era. Building 2 is the newer structure, opened in 2019. Designed with sharp geometric lines and a minimalist white façade, it stands in striking contrast to the historic Building 1.
As it was already quite late when we were there, we simply admired the exterior architectural design of the building.
