25 Dec 2025 - KHH Day 5: Ferry back to Hamasen (哈瑪星) and Railway Art District (鐵道藝文區)

We took the ferry from Cijin Pier back to Hamasen. Once again, Javier and I stood on the outdoor deck, and the journey was smooth sailing.
From Gushan Ferry Pier, we slowly walked towards Hamasen Railway Art District. Once a busy freight railway serving Kaohsiung Port, Hamasen Railway Art District (哈瑪星鐵道文化園區) has been thoughtfully transformed into one of the city’s most atmospheric public spaces. One of the most striking features of the Hamasen Railway Art District is the network of original railway tracks still embedded in the ground. They curved gently across the park, guiding us through the space exactly as trains once did.
Scattered throughout the outdoor area were restored vintage train carriages, old locomotives and railway equipment repurposed as public art.
Actually, there are train-related operations still happening around the Hamasen area. One of them being a coastline sightseeing train called the “Hamasen Express” that operates on weekends and public holidays. This train is a scenic, heritage-style ride that runs along restored tracks around the old railway site. There is also an operational light rail that has a station right in Hamasen.
Within the compound, we visited Takao Railway Museum which is a charming destination for train lovers. Housed in a former railway station, this small but well-preserved museum offered a glimpse into Taiwan’s rail history with vintage locomotives, old station equipment, and interactive exhibits.
What was once an industrial zone is now a spacious urban park. True to its name, the district incorporates art installations and creative elements throughout the park. Some works are subtle, blending into the landscape, while others are playful and bold, encouraging interaction.
