24 Dec 2025 - KHH Day 4: Formosa Boulevard Station (美麗島站) “Dome of Light”

After watching Weibird's live performance at the Central Park, we decided to slowly walk back to Formosa Boulevard station (美麗島站). Formosa Boulevard Station sits at the heart of Kaohsiung’s MRT system, serving both the Red Line and Orange Line, and acting as a major interchange for commuters and visitors alike.
The star attraction at Formosa Boulevard is undoubtedly the Dome of Light, installed in 2008 shortly after the station opened. Designed by Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata, this monumental piece is claimed to be one of the largest glass installations in the world, covering over 2,000 square meters and composed of more than 4,500 panels of colored glass.
The glass dome spans the circular concourse above one of the station’s major passageways. The artwork is divided into themes like Water, Earth, Light, and Fire, telling a narrative of human life, growth, suffering, and hope through vivid colour and form. Brilliant hues of sapphire, crimson, amber, and emerald blend together, refracting station lights and creating an atmosphere that’s immersive rather than decorative.
Every evening, the Dome of Light at Formosa Boulevard Station comes alive with a short but mesmerising light-and-music show that transforms the station from a busy interchange into a moment of quiet spectacle.
The station’s underground passages connect to malls, cafés, boutique stores, and connect to Liuhe Night Market, and major shopping streets.
