21 Dec 2025 - TPE Day 1: Ximending (西门町) and Dinner at Lao Shan Dong (老山东) Beef Noodles

If there’s one place in Taipei that truly comes alive after sunset, it’s Ximending. Often described as Taipei’s answer to Harajuku or Shibuya, this pedestrian-friendly district is where youth culture, shopping, street food, and pop culture all collide in a colourful, energetic mix.
Walking into Ximending, the first thing we noticed was the sheer energy.  Neon signs lighted up the streets, music spilled out from fashion stores, and crowds weaved between performers, pop-up stalls, and food vendors.
It's dinner time and we decided to look for some nice local delicacy. A quick search on the internet led us to an underground food court where we had a comforting dinner at Lao Shan Dong (老山东) Beef Noodles. There was a queue at the store entrance, but it cleared quite quickly.
The star of this store is the beef noodle soup. The broth is clear yet deeply flavourful, with a savoury, aromatic taste that suggests hours of slow simmering. The beef is tender without falling apart, and the noodles have just the right amount of chew.
