Shennong Street is considered one of the most preserved historical streets in Tainan, Taiwan. It was once the entrance to the Tainan Five Channels in the Qing Dynasty. There were canals where many people shipped and exported goods making Shennong Street a densely populated city. Shennong Street is named after, a former Chinese ruler.
Shennong Street dates back to the Qing Dynasty and was once one of Tainan’s busiest commercial streets. Because Tainan was an important port city, merchants dealing in rice, sugar, Chinese medicine, and daily goods gathered here. Many of the houses along the lane are more than a century old. Instead of demolishing them, the city preserved and restored the structures.
Today, the street holds many boutiques, cafes, art, and other food and beverage establishments.
Shennong Street may be short in length (about 100-200 meters), it is rich in atmosphere. It captures the essence of Tainan's layered history, preserved architecture, slow living, and creative reinvention.
