We checked out of Gwawa Hotel this morning and walked to Kaohsiung TRA station, which is about a 15 minutes' walk. We had bought the TRA tickets online to travel to Tainan.
Kaohsiung Station has undergone major transformation in recent years. The newly redeveloped complex felt airy and contemporary. The ticket hall is very spacious with high ceilings. Despite being a major transport hub, the station felt calm and organised. As we were early, we took a rest outside the ticket office. At that time, there was a group of people who seemed to be preparing for some christmas choir performance. And due to the recent knife attack in Taipei, Kaohsiung had also stepped up on its security. We could see a number of police officers patrolling the station.
The train arrived and departed on time.
The train ride from Kaohsiung to Tainan took about 50mins. Once the train pulled out of Kaohsiung’s urban core, the scenery began to shift to open land and patches of farmland.
Arriving at Tainan Station felt different from Kaohsiung’s ultra-modern vibe. The station building retains a historic early 20th-century architectural style, with a cream-coloured façade and classic symmetry.
Our accommodation in Tainan was Yoshi Hotel, located within walking distance from Tainan Station. The lobby was modest but welcoming, functional rather than flashy, which fits well with Tainan’s unpretentious charm.
As it was too early to check into our room, we left our luggage at the hotel lobby and began our exploration of Taiwan's oldest city.
